How to cope starting a new graduate job

Congratulations on securing a graduate job! It might have been a while since you had to step into the role of the ‘new kid’, so it’s understandable if you feel a bit anxious. Not knowing anyone can be daunting, let alone suddenly forgetting everything you ever learnt about Excel. It might be tempting to hide in the bathroom and frantically google masters courses in a desperate bid to continue on as a student, but take a moment to read our advice on coping first.

Just remember that this is the most confused you will be. Your first day (first week) is going to be a struggle, because you are learning your way around. This feeling doesn’t last forever! Chances are you will settle in much faster than you expect and figure out how the coffee machine works sooner or later. Remember that you have the capacity to learn most things, so just work up the courage to ask if you are unsure about anything.

The majority of people in the working world are perfectly nice normal people, not monsters out to make you feel unwelcome. Everyone knows what it’s like to be the newbie, so they are going to be happy to help you in the first few days. It’s crucial that you don’t clam up and feel as though you have no one to turn to if you aren’t feeling happy. Be vocal about anything that’s bothering you otherwise it won’t get sorted out.

Remind yourself of why you are there. Your employer selected you out of dozens of candidates because they saw your potential. You selected them as employers because you felt like you could grow and develop at their company. If you ever have a wobbly moment, then focus on those vital pieces of information. Basically, you are there for very good reasons, so why abandon that, all because of nerves?

Get excited about what’s new. It’s scary, sure, but it’s also something to get energised about. Meeting new people, learning new things – this is the fun stuff that happens less and less as you get older, so enjoy it while you can.
