There’s a certain kind of pressure that once you’ve graduated from university you should know exactly what kind of job role is your cup of tea. In reality, unless you’ve trained for years to be a doctor, lawyer, or teacher, it can be difficult to know what job is right for you until you start doing it. If you find yourself in this position, it can be easy to feel worried, but it’s not as bad as you might think.
The world of startups is waiting for you, and it’s pretty exciting. From fast-tracked professional development and great company culture, here are just a few of the many reasons graduates should consider working in a startup:
Develop new skills
Let’s face it, money doesn’t always come flooding in at startups, but this is an opportunity to develop your skills in a nurturing and dynamic environment. You’ll be able to work on a range of tasks and gain a wealth of experience. Plus, doing different things keeps it interesting!
Get tons of exposure to new ideas and ways of working
When startups are looking to grow, they experiment by trying out crazy ideas and exploring different strategies. Being amongst this means you’ll be exposed to lots of new ways of working. It’s a fun environment to be met with every day and it’ll also make it easier to figure out what you’re really passionate about.

Work closely with an experienced team
Startups generally have pretty small teams. Some can be put off by this, but it’s actually ideal if you’re not dead-set on a particular job role.
If you were to work in marketing for a big company, typically you’ll only be surrounded by your marketing team day-to-day. Now that’s great if you’re obsessed with marketing and only marketing, but if you want to explore other roles it can be quite restricting.
Working in a startup means you’ll be closely involved with the other ‘departments’, as a department could mean just a few people instead of a few hundred people. You’ll regularly be able to see how other job roles function within the company.
Set up your work values for the rest of your career
As we mentioned above, working for a startup means you're part of a small team. Not only that, you are an important member of that team. Being part of a close-knit company is empowering. It gives you the authority to make decisions when you need to, and will only offer you loads of opportunities.
Working on something your whole team genuinely cares about is a really nice feeling. It will help you develop a passionate work ethic that you can take with you throughout your career.
